The golf course at Atlantic Beach Country Club (previously Selva Marina Country Club) is steeped in rich history, having hosted the Greater Jacksonville Open where golf legend Jack Nicklaus recorded his first double eagle in tournament competition on the 18th hole in 1966. More recently, Atlantic Beach Country Club proudly hosted the prestigious Web.com Tour Championship in 2016, 2017, and 2018 and received abundant praise for its impressive conditions. World-renowned golf course architect, Erik Larsen, redesigned the historic golf course, and Atlantic Beach Country Club opened its doors late in 2014. Larsen has been involved in golf course design since 1983 and has designed over 98 golf courses across the world. Atlantic Beach Country Club is special to him, located in his hometown. His design concept is a risk vs. reward-style course. According to Larsen, “The further you hit the ball, the harder the course gets. If you get risky on your tee shot and take an aggressive angle, you will be rewarded on your next shot.” He also stated the importance of designing the course to appeal to each specific class of player. “The trick to a good golf course is making it hard for the good players and fun for the average golfer. I want to see the top players in the area walk off the 18th green and talk about how demanding the course is.”
